What to Expect from Our One-Day Spearfishing Course in Bali

If you've ever been curious about learning spearfishing in Bali, our one-day spearfishing course at Fusion Freedive and Spearfishing is the perfect way to start. This course is designed to give you the skills, safety knowledge, and hands-on experience to confidently dive into the world of spearfishing. Whether you’re a freediver looking to try something new or a complete beginner, we make sure you leave with a strong foundation.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of what you’ll get during the day.

1. Introduction to Spearfishing: Safety and Equipment

The day starts with a short classroom session, where you'll get an introduction to the basics of spearfishing. We go over the key principles of safety, so you understand how to handle your gear and respect the marine environment. Bali is home to many beautiful marine species, and part of learning spearfishing in Bali is understanding the importance of sustainable fishing practices.

We’ll walk you through the equipment, including the speargun, dive mask, fins, wetsuit, and weight belt. You’ll learn how each piece of gear works, and how to properly set it up for your dives. We also explain how to load and fire the speargun safely. Since safety is our top priority, we’ll ensure you are confident before heading into the water.

2. Basic Freediving Skills Review

Spearfishing requires a solid understanding of freediving, as you’ll be diving without tanks. For beginners, we provide an overview of basic freediving skills. We’ll teach you proper breathing techniques to help you stay calm and conserve oxygen underwater, as well as how to equalize pressure as you descend. If you’ve already done a freediving course in Bali or have experience freediving, this will be a great refresher.

Key Tip: Freediving in Bali’s warm waters is a fantastic experience, and you’ll be using these skills all throughout the course.

3. Practical Speargun Target Practice

Before we take you out to the ocean, it’s important that you get comfortable with the speargun. Our instructors will take you to a safe, shallow area where you can practice firing the speargun at a target. We’ll go over shooting techniques, body positioning, and how to aim accurately. This part of the course is not about catching fish yet—it's all about getting used to the equipment and refining your aim.

If you’re nervous about using the speargun, don’t worry! We take it step by step and make sure everyone feels comfortable before moving on to the next part of the training.

4. Spearfishing at the FADs

After your target practice, we’ll head out on a Bali spearfishing trip to the Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs). These are bamboo platforms anchored offshore, where larger fish tend to gather. This is where the real adventure begins! You'll get a chance to dive and use the skills you've learned to hunt for fish.

Our experienced guides, like Agus, will be with you the entire time, giving tips on how to spot fish, approach them without scaring them away, and how to make an accurate shot. Some of the common fish you might encounter at the FADs include mahi-mahi, tuna, and snapper.

Important to Note: You’ll need to apply all your freediving skills, from equalizing to breath-holding techniques, during the dives. This is where your practice in the earlier part of the day will come in handy!

5. Post-Dive: Reviewing Your Catch

Once we’ve finished spearfishing, we’ll head back to shore to review the day’s experience. If you’ve made a catch, we’ll go over how to properly handle and clean the fish. We’ll also discuss the different types of fish you encountered and talk about what you did well and areas to improve on.

Many students love this part of the day because it’s a chance to reflect on their first spearfishing experience and learn from it. And who knows, you might even get to cook and enjoy your catch later!
