Pranayama is the art of breathing. “Prana” is the energy responsible for life, present in all living things, and “ayama” means control. The Prana gets into our body through your breath. So Pranayama is “Control of Breath” or “extension of our vital force” Breathing is life. It is our bodies most vital function. Proper breathing is fundamental to oxygenating the blood and to controling the vital energy, prana. If one controls the breath or Prana, the mind also is controlled. Pranayama exercises help us to calm down the fluctuations of the mind in order to relax. In fusion we give special importance to pranayama, as a very important part of the training of the freediver. Pranayama exercises are important to expand the flexibility of the rib cage, thoracic area, chest and diaphragm, increase the lung vital capacity and decrease the residual volume. Pranayamas are performed together with asanas to get the greatest benefit of the training.
